Cosmetic Botox® at Jubilee Dental
The everyday facial movements involved in smiling, frowning, squinting, and raising your eyebrows can gradually create visible expression lines. Cosmetic Botox® temporarily relaxes selected facial muscles, which can help soften the look of these lines.
Dr. Sherry takes a personalized, conservative approach to cosmetic Botox®. Your treatment is planned around your facial features, muscle movement, and goals, with the aim of a refreshed, natural looking result that still lets your face move and express normally.
Cosmetic Botox® may be a good fit if you would like to soften the look of expression lines or slow down new lines from forming.
Since every face and every patient’s goals are different, Dr. Sherry will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual needs.
Therapeutic Botox® for TMJ symptoms and jaw tension
Jaw clenching and teeth grinding put a lot of strain on the muscles around the jaw. Over time, this can lead to jaw fatigue, facial tension, headaches, tooth sensitivity, and damage to your teeth.
Therapeutic Botox® may help reduce the activity and force of overworked jaw muscles. By temporarily relaxing the muscles involved in clenching and grinding, treatment may ease muscle related tension and discomfort.
Symptoms that may be linked to overactive jaw muscles include:
- Jaw tightness, fatigue, or discomfort
- Clenching or grinding during the day or while you sleep
- Morning headaches
- Facial or temple tension
- Tension that reaches into your head or neck
- Worn, chipped, or sensitive teeth
- Tender or enlarged jaw muscles
- Discomfort when chewing
These symptoms can have several different causes. Botox® is not the right treatment for every type of jaw pain, which is why an assessment is important before we recommend treatment.
Depending on your symptoms and what we find during your exam, Dr. Sherry may recommend Botox® on its own or as one part of a broader treatment plan. Other options may include a custom oral appliance, bite management strategies, or a referral to another healthcare provider when needed.

What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?
The temporomandibular joints, usually called the TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull. These joints and the muscles around them let you speak, chew, swallow, and move your jaw.
Temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, is a general term for conditions that affect the jaw joints, chewing muscles, or related structures.
Patients often say TMJ when they mean jaw pain or dysfunction, but the joint itself is the TMJ, while TMD describes a disorder involving that area.
Since jaw discomfort can come from the joint, the surrounding muscles, your bite, or another source, a proper assessment is important for finding out which treatment may help.
How does Botox® work?
Botox® is a purified neurotoxin that temporarily reduces communication between certain nerves and muscles. When it is carefully injected into selected muscles, it reduces the strength of repeated muscle contractions.
For cosmetic treatment, this can soften the look of expression lines caused by muscle movement.
For therapeutic jaw treatment, reducing the activity of selected chewing muscles may help lessen the force behind clenching or grinding.
The effect is temporary and gradually wears off as muscle activity returns. Results, how long they last, and how much treatment is needed vary from person to person.
What to expect at your Botox® consultation
Your consultation with Dr. Sherry is an important part of the process. It gives her the chance to understand your concerns and find out whether Botox® may be right for you.
During your consultation, Dr. Sherry may:
- Talk with you about your concerns and goals
- Review your medical and dental history
- Review your medications, allergies, and any past Botox® treatments
- Check your facial movement or jaw muscle activity
- Examine your teeth and bite if TMJ symptoms or clenching are involved
- Explain the possible benefits and limits of treatment
- Talk about possible risks and side effects
- Build a treatment plan made for you
- Answer your questions before you decide whether to go ahead
Some patients can be treated at the same appointment, while others may come back for a separate treatment visit.
What happens during treatment?
Botox® is given using a very fine needle placed into carefully chosen muscles. The number and location of injections depends on whether your treatment is cosmetic or therapeutic, along with your own anatomy and goals.
Treatment appointments are usually short, and most patients can go back to their normal day right afterward. Dr. Sherry will give you personalized instructions on what to do, and what to avoid, after your treatment.
When will I notice results?
Botox® does not work right away. Some patients start to notice changes within a few days, with results continuing to develop after that.
The timing, amount of change, and how long results last are different for each person. Things like the treatment area, muscle strength, your goals, and how your body responds can all affect the outcome.
Dr. Sherry will explain what you can reasonably expect from your personalized treatment plan.
Is Botox® right for everyone?
Botox® may not be right for everyone. Certain medical conditions, medications, allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or past reactions may affect whether treatment is recommended for you.
A consultation is required so Dr. Sherry can review your health history, look at your concerns, and talk with you about whether Botox® is a good option.
Botox® also may not be the right treatment for every cause of headache, facial pain, or jaw discomfort. If another condition or source of pain is suspected, we may recommend further assessment or a referral.

Frequently asked questions about Botox®
The same medication may be used, but the purpose, treatment areas, and goals are different. Cosmetic Botox® is used to soften selected expression lines. Therapeutic Botox® may be used to reduce muscle activity linked to conditions like jaw clenching and grinding.
Botox® does not cure every cause of TMD. It may help some patients whose symptoms are linked to overactive or tense jaw muscles. An assessment is needed to find out what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Not necessarily. Botox® reduces muscle activity, while a nightguard or oral appliance can help protect your teeth and manage the forces affecting your bite. Some patients benefit from one treatment, while others benefit from a combination of both.
Treatment itself is usually short, though your first appointment will take longer since we also review your health history, concerns, and treatment plan.
Most patients describe the injections as quick pinches. Sensitivity is different for everyone, and Dr. Sherry will do what she can to make your appointment as comfortable as possible.
Results are temporary and vary between patients. Muscle activity gradually comes back over time, and repeat treatment may be considered if it makes sense for you.
Treatment is carefully planned and directed at selected muscles. Temporary changes or weakness can happen, which is why treatment needs to be personalized, and possible side effects should be discussed during your consultation.
Side effects are possible with any treatment. These may include temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or headache. Other less common effects may happen depending on the injection area. Dr. Sherry will go over the possible risks and give you aftercare instructions before treatment.
Coverage is different between insurance providers and individual plans. Please contact your insurance provider directly to ask about eligibility, what documents are needed, and whether a prescription or preauthorization is required. Jubilee Dental cannot guarantee reimbursement from an insurance provider.
Headaches can have many causes. Signs like morning headaches, jaw fatigue, worn teeth, or tenderness in your chewing muscles may point to clenching or grinding, but an assessment is needed to know for sure. Persistent, severe, or unexplained headaches should also be discussed with your physician.
